A Terraria character and a Terraria world are not the same backup. Moving a character does not, by itself, preserve the buildings and state of the world you played in. Decide whether you are archiving a player, a world or the complete experience before you copy any files.

Community save download

Builder’s Workshop — hosted on CurseForge. This is a downloadable Terraria world/map, not a character save. Choose the appropriate release, check its game-version requirements and keep your Players and Worlds backups separate.

Local Players and Worlds paths

The official Terraria Wiki documents separate local Windows directories for player and world data. These reference paths are: 1 2

%USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\Terraria\Players
%USERPROFILE%\Documents\My Games\Terraria\Worlds

These are local-PC reference locations, not a replacement for instructions specific to cloud saves, mobile versions or a modded environment. If the expected file is absent, verify how that character or world is stored in your installation before changing anything.

Decide what the archive contains

A player archive should clearly identify the character and associated data. A world archive should identify the world and its relevant data. For a full personal backup, preserve both and record which character and world you intended to use together.

Avoid vague names such as Terraria-Full-Save when the package contains only one part. A descriptive note should state Player, World or Both, along with the game version and any relevant mod environment. A file title is not proof that the package contains every component needed for your goal.

Confirm the source before transferring

Open the game and identify the intended character and world. Note recognizable details without exposing unnecessary personal information. Exit normally, then back up the active player and world directories outside their original location.

Keep an untouched copy before inspecting or renaming files. When several names look similar, compare them with the in-game selection and file modification times. Do not discard companion files merely to simplify an archive.

Transfer with a limited test

  1. Extract the incoming package into a temporary directory.
  2. Determine whether it contains a player, a world or both, and compare its environment with yours.
  3. Confirm the active destination paths and protect any same-named original files.
  4. Put player data in the relevant player location and world data in the relevant world location.
  5. Choose the intended character and world deliberately when starting the game.
  6. Inspect the expected inventory or world changes, save normally, exit and load again.

Back up both sides even when testing only one. This keeps your own character and world available if the new pairing is not what you expected.

When part of the experience is missing

Ask which component you transferred. An unexpected inventory calls for checking the selected character; missing buildings or world progress calls for checking the selected world. Treat these as diagnostic questions rather than immediately overwriting more files.

A package from a modded environment needs its own documented requirements. Do not claim compatibility with the base game simply because the folder name or game title looks familiar. Preserve the original archive and record the environment actually tested.

Frequently asked questions

Does a world backup include my character?

Do not assume that. Player and world data are separate; preserve both for a complete personal backup.

Do these paths cover every Terraria platform?

No. They are local Windows reference paths. Cloud, console, mobile and modded setups require their own applicable instructions.

Sources and scope

Reference paths and features can vary by edition, storefront and system configuration. The backup and testing checklists are SaveGamesDL editorial guidance; no downloadable save was tested for this article.
